The responsibilities of the Federal Ministry for Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection include the areas of health, social policy, social security, consumer protection, labour legislation, labour protection and labour market policy. Therefore, the Sozialministerium is also the highest authority regarding labour migration.

Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMeiA)

In many cases the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs is the first contact point on migration matters. Our diplomatic and consular missions abroad decide on short term visas. As to questions concerning long-term stay in Austria they provide advice to applicants as well as forward applications to the competent authorities in Austria for further decision.

Public Employment Service

The Public Employment Service (AMS) offers a wide range of services and support for jobseekers and employers. In the area of labour migration, the AMS decides over admission to the labour market according to the Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals (AuslBG). The AMS also examines whether the criteria for the grant of a Red-White-Red Card are fulfilled.
